Simple Steps to a Sustainable Contact Lens Business 03:15 PM - 04:15 PM - Sunday 28th February - Virtual
Growing your contact lens business doesn’t need to be daunting or difficult. Recommending contact lenses has never been easier than it is today: more powers, parameters, designs, materials and the desire of patients to wear. It doesn’t matter how much someone loves their glasses - there are moments when they’re a problem, but for many small practices the administration of their contact lens practice drives them crazy and you may wonder if it’s worth the effort?

As a small business owner and Optometrist who loves wearing and fitting contact lenses, I’d like to share some simple ways to grow your contact lens business.

This is not a clinical contact lens session but a way to look at the business elements involved as a taster to inspire development of your own system.

Pamela Robertson BSc Hons MCOptom Dip Tp (IP) PG Dip PCOpthal– Biography

I qualified from Glasgow Caledonian in 1999 with a first class in Optometry, spent a short time working in multiples before heading into the independent sector in 2002.

In 2005, I set up my own practice from scratch in my home town of Forfar (with my husband as a not so silent partner – both fool hardy and exhilarating), and since joining Sightcare in 2006, I have never looked back. My dynamic practice in Forfar offers eyecare for all ages, including complex contact lens fittings, low vision and paediatric eyecare, and in 2011 we moved to larger premises, thus enabling turnover to increase despite a multitude of business and personal obstacles.

I completed my Independent Prescribing qualification in 2011, and I hope to complete an MSc in Primary Care Ophthalmology in 2017. In addition to my practice commitments, I am a visiting lecturer at the university of Dundee and a sessional tutor with NHS Education for Scotland as well as the current chair of my LOC (due to step down 2019). I have been a speaker at a previous Sightcare Conference and previously serviced on the Board for Sightcare from 2013-2014. (I resigned from this role to allow me to concentrate on my MSc studies). When I’m not working, I enjoy being outdoors with all that my local area has to offer, and spend hours traipsing muddy paths with my dog.

So you think you want to go private? 10:15 AM - 11:15 AM - Monday 1st March - Virtual

Many independent optometrists are struggling with the difficult decision whether to continue offering NHS care. A conundrum that many practices in the UK are grappling with as they consider how to remain financially viable in the context of a pandemic. Thanks to new technology, the standard of eye care independents can offer is now better than ever. The latest equipment uses the same advanced technology patients would find in a hospital. Unfortunately, the NHS funding received simply doesn’t cover the cost of providing these advanced screening techniques.

SightCare Coach David Samuel will be joined by 2 independent practice owners and Optometrists who will discuss why and how they made the shift to only providing private eye care and explaining  their new way of working.
